SmartYoga

The SmartYoga approach works wonders for those who are willing to take responsibility for their own health and well-being.  It is my belief that healing is a conscious process in which education and empowerment are the keys to our transformation.  If you are willing to learn about your body and to practice a simple routine of exercises daily then SmartYoga is for you.

When I began my yoga journey over 15 years ago I could not have clearly explained what I was after.  A compulsive exerciser since childhood, I realized at an early age that physical exertion both energized my body and relaxed my busy mind and yet it seemed to me that some deeper experience was possible and that the gateway to that experience might be the body.

At that time hatha (posture based) yoga was nowhere near as prevalent as it is today and it took a trip to Australia before I found a school and a style of yoga that appealed to my ambitious nature. Stiff bodied and bull headed I dedicated myself intensely to this new form of ‘exercise’ pushing and prodding my reluctant body into the postures with little thought of technique or alignment.

Yoga was simply a new mountain to climb, a new system to master.

After almost two years of intensive, daily practice which took me from Australia to India and then finally back home to Canada, my body was aching and broken.
I suffered from many injuries and ailments (including low back pain) all seemingly brought on by my yoga practice.  How was this possible?
Wasn’t yoga supposed to be good for me?

Luckily for me I had landed at a new studio with new teachers who were able to answer these questions. It seems that I was mistaken in not just my technique and alignment, but also in my basic understanding of the very purpose of yoga itself.

Through diligent study and education (much of it anatomical and biomechanical) I was able to clearly define for myself the purpose of yoga practice, turning an unconscious process into a conscious one and healing my body in the process.

Yoga is amazing technology and strong medicine and, when used effectively, it is capable of healing and correcting many physical ailments and dysfunctions thought by western medicine to be mysterious or ‘incurable’.

For over a decade, as both an instructor and therapeutic practitioner, I have been using the incredible tool of yoga combined with anatomical explanation to educate and empower my clients and my students and I am honored to include you among their ranks.
